Fresh Tomatoes

So I have a tomato garden, of sorts, behind the house.

I've never grown any vegetables before. I still don't know what I'm doing.

I think the plants are overgrown. They spill out onto the lawn. Is that normal?

The stakes I put in last week are now falling over.

But I'm seeing good things happen back there. Hard to believe these were once the itty bitty plants we bought for $2 each back in May.

These big guys are getting bigger. But not any redder yet.

And then there's these little ones... amazing! They grew RIGHT out of the ground!

I picked a handful of the little guys to add to my salad for lunch.

And let me just tell you - they're scrumptious.

Wow!! I'm impressed, my tomato plants aren't producing nearly that much!

Our cherry tomato plants in years past (and at least half this year) have definitely tended towards the crazy vine everywhere side of the spectrum too, I always wonder if they should be pruned or something, but they certainly produce well enough..

From my "research" (ie, reading some websites online) tomatoes will taste better if you prune the suckers, which are the stems that grow out from the crook between a stem that grows into the ground and a tomato producing branch. If you google "tomato plant suckers" there will be photos that are much more helpful. Anyway, I had astoundingly delicious tomatoes last summer, and my plant grew pretty much straight up and not all over the place like that (you will get fewer tomatoes, but they'll be better tasting, supposedly). Hope that helps! They look awesome, though. :) I can't wait to have a garden of my very own.... :)

Next year, try some tomato cages. You can buy them or make them yourself. We made our own from chicken wire this year. Our growing season is a bit later than yours. I don't have any red ones yet.
