The Kitchen

The cabinet painting project is finally complete. [fist pump]

The shiny 80's oak? Gone. The very fake-looking wood paneling? Gone. A contemporary, cottage-y feel on a limited budget? Achieved.

First, the before shots. We took these pics when we were still house hunting.

And here's one from just a couple of weeks ago.

We never liked the cabinet color and finish. But we REALLY never liked the wood paneling on the sides and back of the cabinets.

So we took the kitchen apart. We sanded. We painted. We bought new hardware. We spray painted hinges. We put the kitchen back together.

Then we rested. And enjoyed a visit from Josh's parents.

And then? We took off the trim and old paneling. We bought beadboard. We got it cut at Lowe's. We bought a jig saw. We cut a hole for an outlet. We sanded. We painted. We put it up. We put on the old trim (painted white to match.) We caulked. We touched up the paint.

And now? Here is what our kitchen looks like.

Our cheap-o kitchen makeover ended up costing around $400. The total includes the purchase of an electric sander and jig saw, in addition to hardware, primer, paint, liquid nails, "real" nails, and beadboard.

To us, it's $400 well spent.

The fake wood paneling is GONE. Replaced by crisp beadboard, painted white. This might be our favorite part. But we're suckers for beadboard.

Your next career needs to be flipping houses. You guys would make a FORTUNE! Awesome job!

I absolutely love the make-over! It really stood out to me for some reason, but then I realized your kitchen has the same layout as the house I grew up in! It was a bungalow with 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, and kitchen and dining room area upstairs, and then a half-finished basement downstairs. I'm wondering how similar the rest of the house is!

I'm a sucker for green. All for $400? Wow. Now that's the kind of contractor I need. So when can you start on my kitchen renovation? J/K! Nice job!

Might I ask? How much did it cost to do the beadboarding?

Love your kitchen makeover! May I ask where you got that light fixture in the dining area?

What do the inside of the cabinets look like? Did you paint them too? I've got the same cabinets and am very tempted to do the same!

Amazing! I didn't even notice your hard wood floors in the gloomy dark before photos.

Your new scheme brings them out and let's them shine!

I saw your kitchen on young house love - you did such a fantastic job! We have the same cabinets and I'm just getting ready to prep them to go white as well - I love the beadboard you did as well!! Great job!

Love it! We are planning to paint our cabinets white as well (they are the same as your before) and this totally has completed my inspiration. Great job!

Wonderful job! A follow up post of EXACTLY how you tackled those cabinets would be really terrific. I'm hoping to redo similar cabinets that I have and would really love more pointers: did you you primer, sand & paint the insides, what color did you spray paint the hinges, etc??? Thanks so much!!!

I just popped over to your blog from YHL and I just have to say- WOW! Amazing transformation! I also have to say...I live in Columbus too (Westerville), so I was especially excited to see your blog highlighted on YHL.

Where did you get your saddle-seat bar stools? I love them.

Love the kitchen! What kind of countertops do you have? They look similar to mine, and I have been having a hard time deciding on a paint. Mine are Wilson Art HD Bella Venito

Could you tell me where you found your counter stools? Love them!

I love it! I have a question: when you guys painted, did you paint the insides of the cabinets?

I found you on John and Sherry's blog...WOW! I love what you did, and the colors are amazing. I also love that you reused instead of replacing. Nice job, you have a new fan.

I also found your blog through YHL. I might do the same to our cabinets. I'm staying tuned for the follow up post of painting the cabinets (inside and out?) I hope it comes soon. :) Great job!

Hi. Awesome job on your kitchen reno! I am gearing up to do exactly the same thing you guys did, beadboard and all! Can you tell me though, what type of beadboard you used? Was it the real wood ply-bead panel, or a primed hardboard panel, or the acutal tongue and groove stuff? I have also been toying around with the idea of beadboard wallpaper for the smaller, upper cabinet ends! Great job again!

I have a question if you could help:

I noticed your baseboard was painted white... did you pull it off, sand it down and then paint it? When I took a closer look, I noticed that near your dining room table the baseboard looks thicker - did you totally replace? How much was the cost?! I am dying to do this to our house but I haven't quite convinced myself as the entire trim, baseboard, and crown molding in the house would need to be painted as well as the hollow fake oak doors! AHH, lots of work. Any help would be appreciated!!

This was really interesting. I loved reading it.

Did you have to sand your cabinets before painting to get the paint to adhere?
