Our Weed

Friday evening, soon after our friends Patrick and Erin arrived at our house:

Jessica: We have the best weed in our backyard.
Erin: [blank, concerned stare that totally says are you saying what I think you're saying?]
Jessica: No, I promise we aren't growing marijuana behind our townhouse. A weed weed. Really.

And why did I feel the need to point out our blatant disregard for backyard upkeep?

Because our weed was the best I've ever seen. And by best I mean biggest. Jack-and-the-Beanstalk-esque.

I think that is in the neighborhood of 8 feet tall. And it sprouted up randomly over the summer. I didn't have the heart to pull it out (which I'm sure would totally take some doing!) when we moved back to Bloomington and it was as tall as me. I was too curious to see how far it would go. And then I proceeded to watch it grow another couple of feet over the month of August.

Sadly, it fell over in a big wind storm we had yesterday. Goodbye weed. I'll honestly miss watching you grow.

Totally cracked me up! I've NEVER seen anything like that before...that must have been some kind of superweed!

Last year I had a giant weed on the side of our house. I bet it was 7' tall. This year, we had a cute little one in the backyard that I insisted was a flower. It was not. I still haven't pulled it out!

Maybe you've inherited some "farming" instincts from your ancestors, the Sharplesses and the Buurmas, that you were not aware of. (Oops! Dangling participle there) I'm afraid only weeds grow on a steady diet of neglect, otherwise I'd think it was a stray sunflower seed that took root in your back yard.

You probably won't want to share that one with Mark or Uncle Herm.

We had a weed like that when we moved into this house. Not that big, but the same kind of beast. Being a the gardener that I am, I said to Jason, "What kind of plant is that?" LOL! I have a black thumb like no other.
