I Am NOT Smarter Than A 5th Grader

So last night we got together with some friends and played this new board game, based on the tv show with the same name. It involves answering grade school-type trivia correctly to move forward.
So I got to a 2nd grade geography question:
What is the capital of Canada?
A. Toronto
B. Ottawa
C. Quebec
And got it WRONG (I chose A).
How is it that I am 24 years old and do not know the capital of the next nearest country? What is my problem? Indeed, I am not even smarter than a 2nd grader.

Okay, but here's my point. When you're ten, the biggest thing in your life is memorizing capitals and deciding where you should sit on the bus.

When you're 25, the biggest thing in your life is marriage, work, friends, family, rent/mortgage, food, clothing, cleaning, sleeping, and well, geez, I know I had something else I was thinking of, but I forgot. Maybe because I have so much stuff on my mind.

So by the time you're twenty-five you have to tell the capital of Canada to hightail it because you have to make room for your bank routing number so you can pay the bills.

I'm probably going to be dumber than a 2nd grader too, but since you opened the door...is it Quebec?

Julie, so glad you don't know either. It is Ottawa. I thought that was a province (think state) of Canada, not a city. Oops.

It's not so bad Jessica, Canada is really just the 51st state anyway so it's more like forgetting one of the state capitals. We all do that from time to time. Besides, if you've ever been to Ottawa it's a very forgettable city. Like Scranton, PA with a French accent.

I don't think I would have known that either, sadly. But take heart, if we all knew everything we were supposed to know, what need would we have of others! :)

I think you shouldn't worry about it so much... I mean did they ask you to write in cursive as well... have you written in cursive since 5th grade? ;)

I would've gotten that one wrong, too!

LOL...I think we get dumber as we get older! Have you ever seen those teens on teen Jeopardy? Yikes.

Don't feel bad, Jess. I didn't know that Egypt is in Africa. And I was in Egypt at the time!
